Ode to Space Opera

Well here we go, a poem about space opera, something that was very near and dear to my heart as a child. There hasn't been one in quite some time, oh certainly some will argue that the Star Wars Prequel trilogy was a space opera and while I can't technically disagree, it didn't have quite the epic feeling of things like Flash Gordon or Dune. Here you go, I hope you enjoy it.

Beyond the Stars

A long long time ago
Very very far away
People lived in a grand universe
Where good and evil battled across a star filled canvas
Where like gunslingers and samurai of old
honest men faced genocidal overlords in contests of the highest stakes
With nothing more than a quick hand and a code of honor
Stretching across systems and worlds filled with endless wonder
On the harsh paper clean tundra of frozen worlds
Across murky life teeming overgrown swamp planets
Through the blistering plains of sun starched deserts
A galaxy where everything was possible
Life
Death
Betrayal
Love
Redemption
In a land where everyone stands to lose everything
The brave dauntless few
Stood at the edge of hope
The edge of light and dark
And drew a line
Civilizations rose and fell
Men and women warred and died
And in the end
If for only a moment
Evil was banished
Defeated
Beaten
Until
The laughter came again
And the merciless returned
