I’m going to try and take part
in the #RPGaDay writing prompts for 2021. The idea is there’s a prompt every
day that asks you to write about something in RPG’s you really like. There are
a couple of alternate prompts offered but I’m going to try and do the main one
every day. If you want to try it yourself, you can head here for the calendar
for this year.
Today
we talk about Streams. I’m going to choose to use this as an excuse to talk
about some of my favorite streams and podcasts. I assume others will as well
and I can’t wait to see who everyone talks about today.
Dungeons and Daddies 17+ (Podcast)
A
group of four dads from our world are thrust into the Forgotten Realms in
search of their stolen children. This is a fun adult podcast with a great sense
of humor and great characters. The four dads are all wonderful characters with
unique motivations, problems, and strengths. One of the true strengths of the
show is how most of the dads have had wonderful arcs that show their growth as
people and parents. Additionally, the world is populated with fantastic NPC’s,
with the likes of Scam Likely, being a particular favorite.
They
drop a one hour episode every other week and they’re tons of fun. While the
humor is probably the thing that attracts most people and I do enjoy it, the
story that unfolds is quite engrossing and I’m looking forward to upcoming
conclusion of season 1. I will warn you that it can get dark, especially where
one of the series villains becomes involved, but well worth it overall.
The Oxventure Guild 13+ (Podcast/Stream)
The
combined talents of two separate sister channels, Outside Xbox and Outside Xtra,
have formed a D&D stream with DM Johnny Chiodini to create two wonderful
roleplay stories. The first and longest is set in the Kingdom of G’eth. The
team travels the land stumbling their way from one adventure to another. Every
challenge is met with a variable degrees of success. The challenges are usually
overcome with a series of unique plans involving puns, explosions, and varying
degrees of skeletons.
The
other show is a Blades in the Dark story. Here the story is run by Luke Westaway
with Johnny taking on the role of a player. A team of thieves is assembled by a
mysterious patron and set on a series of heists leading to a larger reward.
Where the D&D campaign is the more traditional party of five heroes Blades
tends to focus on pairs of players working towards a smaller goal with the
season ending in a large heist that requires the entire team be assembled.
Both shows are filled with humor, puns, and
action. The characters are all great to watch and the interactions enjoyable. D&D
is a fun romp with a wonderful jab at the fantasy genre and all that in
entails. Blades has been away for a while due to time constraints and I’m
hoping for its return sooner rather than later, but I understand why it’s been
pushed back and am willing to wait. Livestream videos can be found on YouTube
of both shows, with the D&D being the only one so far found on podcast.
Dragon Friends 17+ (Stream/Podcast)
Dragon
Friends is what happens when you take a group of Australian improv comics and
have them play D&D. The team is wonderfully funny with a lot of offbeat
stories, ideas, and challenges. The game is led by DM Dungeon Dave Harmo who
works with Ben Jenkins to provide voice to all of the NPC’s. this gives the game
an interesting feel where you’re never certain if the DM knows exactly what the
NPC’s will be doing.
The
story has spanned five seasons starting as humble adventures in a typical
fantasy kingdom and has moved well beyond. They have since traveled to Future
Tokyo, Space, and the distant past. While they’ve faced many villains, season
three was a particularly surprising reveal. Their main antagonist is usually
the best and most original depiction of Strahd I’ve ever seen.
The
principal story is laid out in a pod cast with several side stories, groups,
and settings being performed on livestreams found on Twitch and YouTube.
Late to the Party 13+ (Podcast)
I’ve
only recently started listening to this one. A group of adventures living in
modern Florida are dealing with an unusual incursion of magic into the Miami
area. The team is all learning more about one another while dealing with these
new problems.
Thus
far, I find the show incredibly fun and a interesting take on the fantasy
genre. As I said, I’m not far in but listening to everyone has been lots of fun
and I’m looking forward to hearing more on how these characters handle this
setting.
That’s
all I’ve got for now. I’m looking forward to finding more podcasts and what
other people have to talk about.
I’ll
see you all tomorrow for medium.
Until
then, stay safe and be well.
